HOLLY TAPPED HER FOOT while she waited for Kevin to speak. He dropped the bank note as if it were on fire, and the students volleyed their stares between her and Kevin.

His words were more like a stammer. “I, wasn’t. Adam found—and then—Holly. I would never betray your trust that way.”

Rachel raised her hand. “It’s true. Adam held it, and passed it to Kevin as you walked in.”

Holly swallowed hard. “Please give it to me. I left it by mistake when I was doing some research.” Her eyes searched Kevin’s. A flood of warmth emanated from his gaze, which in turn softened her rigid stance.

Kevin stood and walked over, keeping his focus on her. The intensity nearly made her knees buckle. Once he handed the paper to her, their fingers grazed, igniting a spark of chemistry so strong she stepped back. “Holly, if you want to—”

Holly cut him off as fear and electricity battled for control within her. “I need to check on the others. I’ll be back.” She turned toward the hall, grasping the note like a lifeline. It was Adam’s voice she heard as she trekked away.

“Hey, Kevin, do you and Holly have something going on? If she had stayed another minute I think we would’ve needed to call the fire department.”

After the student groups left, Holly sat at her desk to review the paperwork Rachel had left behind. She read the same sentence about movie props three times before placing the folder back down. Although Holly was completely out of practice, she was desperate enough to close her eyes and fold her hands. God, help me. I feel so overwhelmed. Is the mansion in trouble? What do I do? She sank her head down and rested until the folder stuck to her forehead.

Holly sighed and started pacing. She heard footsteps heading toward her and peeked down the hall. Uncle Nick. He ambled with slumped shoulders, his appearance so unlike him that Holly trekked to him. “Are you okay? You’re pale.”

He stopped, shook his head, and pulled out a paper from his back pocket. “I should have said something sooner.”
